There are thousands of
children in Kenya who have lost either both or one of their parents due to HIV
AIDS. Many orphans are taken by their extended family members and foster
parents but some families find it difficult to take care of kids for financial
reasons and due to this reason place them in the children’s office who the
refer them to the centre. In many of the orphanage project placements, the
school going children are in the school during the school term in morning
hours. During these hours, only the smaller children are at the centre and the
volunteers are expected to assist in daily chores such as cooking, cleaning and
washing during these hours. After the children come back from school during
afternoons, volunteers play with them and help them in their studies.
If a volunteer is a trained professional,
then obviously the centre would like to avail of these special skills, be it in
medical, nursing, counselling or teaching. CARA Projects provides volunteers with accommodation of
their own while they are working at the centre.
CARA can also organise a
unique opportunity to teach in Masai Community Schools in the rift valley.
Teaching in the Masai Areas is a unique experience in itself. Volunteers work
in community schools and teach subjects such as English, Maths, General
knowledge, Geography and Sciences. The schools in Kenya are open for the
following months/terms – January –March, May-July and Sep – Nov. During the
breaks in between volunteers teach children in the extra classes and tutorials.
All the volunteers joining this program interact
with the Masai community where they learn the traditional way of living and
Masai culture.
The project is highly recommended for volunteers
who love working outdoors and are looking to get an experience of the life of
the traditional Masai people. During the free time and on weekends,
volunteers can go on Safaris, or ask one of the local Masai's to bring you for a walk in the rift Valley to see the giraffes!
